History of Saint-Seurin district

The Basilica of St. Seurin, around which developed the district, was built from the 11th to the 15th century. The dominant architecture is Romanesque, but the building is built on a paleochristian crypt of the 4th and 6th century, of Gallo-Roman architecture. The basilica, haloed by mysteries, carries many legends, especially around Roland and his companions, but also the burials of Saint-Seurin and Saint-Fort. Located just behind the Quinconces, Saint-Seurin is a historic district of Bordeaux. Its buildings date mostly from the 18th or the 19th century, the golden age of Bordeaux, capital of wine and trade around the port of the Moon.

The Saint-Seurin basilica is a must in Bordeaux in general and the Saint-Seurin district in particular. Built on the site of the first Christian places of worship in Bordeaux, it is home to an archaeological crypt of great interest. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it is also a major step on the roads to Santiago de Compostela. A district dominated by 18th and 19th century bourgeois architecture, Saint-Seurin has many architectural and historical treasures: the amphitheater of the "Palais Gallien", former Roman arena of Burdigala; the ruins of Castle River in the park of the same name; or the Frugès house, a mansion renovated by the greatest artists and craftsmen of the early 20th century, which is a true mirror of the techniques and specificities of Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Neighborhood near the center and served by the tramway, Saint-Seurin is equipped with all local services and amenities expected by families, including doctors, shops and schools. It is also famous for its rich cultural offer: the area houses the theaters of Trianon and Comédie Gallien, two libraries, the Museum of Natural History, or the cultural institute Bernard Magrez. Four markets, including one exclusively dedicated to organic products, also enliven the streets of the Saint-Seurin district.
