History of Quinsac

Located on the right bank of the Garonne River at less than 15 km from the city center of bordeaux, Quinsac is a commune in the urban area of Bordeaux. Its territory has developed in the Gironde region of Entre Deux Mers, famous for its dry white wines and AOC Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. Quinsac is today considered the capital of Clairet, a Bordeaux wine abandoned locally after the departure of the English at the end of the Hundred Years War, but which continued to be exported to England in the 16th century: little macerated and resulting from a short fermentation, this light red wine and little tannin is going to be produced again in a traditional way in 1950 by the winemaker Emile Peynaud, who distributes it to the cellar of Quinsac. The Bordeaux Clairet appellation is born and Quinsac becomes the capital of Clairet.

The essentials of Quinsac 

Entirely destroyed in the late 1860s, the Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens was rebuilt in 1872 in a neo-Gothic style designed by the architect Jean-Jules Mondet. Its remarkable altarpiece comes from the chapel of Sainte-Foy-de-Conques. Building dating from the first 17th century, Château Péconet has a highly ornate, Mannerist-inspired architecture. It now houses the Atlantic Wall Museum. The production of Clairet wine, inspired by the type of wine that the region exported to England in the late Middle Ages, offers Quinsac a worldwide reputation. The small town celebrates its wine annually in May: a fountain of Clairet flows then generously during one hour. The cellar of Quinsac is a must in the Gironde.
