History of the Ornano district

The district of Ornano, whose territory is initially composed of some beautiful mansions, is really formed in the middle of the 19th century with the creation of the big boulevards. A network of streets is born then, which is populated of families of the middle and popular classes. The district sees settling of trade and several manufactures. The infantry barracks are also established there. The district owes its name to Alphonse d'Ornano, mayor of Bordeaux at the turn of the 16th century and the 17th century: recommended by Henry IV, he took office in 1599. Very popular, he particularly fought valiantly against the epidemic of plague from 1604. A white marble statue representing him is on display at the Musée d'Aquitaine.

Between Mériadeck and Saint-Genès, the Ornano district unfolds around the street of the same name. Squares shaded by plane trees that host weekly markets give it a village atmosphere in the city.
