History of the Grand Théâtre district

Inaugurated in 1780, the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux is the work of architect Victor Louis. Place de la Comedie at the former site of the Gallo-Roman forum, it is part of a prestigious architectural complex formed by the Place de Tourny and the Triangle d'or of Bordeaux. The construction of the theater between the creation and development of the Place de la Bourse (then Place Royale), the Place Gambetta (then place Dauphine), the Place de la Victoire (then Place d'Aquitaine), the alleys of Tourny and the Jardin Public. While the theater with a capacity of 1500 seats in the gardens of the former Town Hall near the Grosse-Cloche disappeared in a fire in 1755, the Bordelais await the construction of a building to the Italian at the height of their city, its importance and its fame. The first stone was laid in 1776. 4 years later, Racine's Athalie inaugurated the stage of the Grand Théâtre.
